It's been a terrible start for a Seattle team that had high expectation going into the preseason following an extended offseason. Coming off an appearance in the Drunks Cup, the Spartans were expected to be contenders in the shortened season relying on their veteran leadership. So far, the results haven't been there. However, improvement have been made. "We've got to get more shots at the net and do a much better job on the penalty kill." Quipped head coach Michel Therrien. "We've been far to lax in those departments and it's killed us early on. We got absolutely lit up in our first two games which is unfortunate, but in our last three losses we've went to a SO and OT and lost each game by only 1 goal."
The 2nd line has done a decent job of generating offense, helping the Spartans in their only win (a blowout 11-1 affair). Assistant captain Ryan Malone stated "We haven't played for a long time. We're just getting our legs back and we have to develop chemistry again with all our teammates. We hope that once the real season starts that we'll be what our fans expect." Captain Henrik Sedin and Assistant Jay Bouwmeester weren't available for comment, as quite frankly, they haven't showed up in the preseason.
In other news, the Spartans farm team in Tacoma has undergone a name change. The Tacoma Trout are now the Tacoma Walleye and have upgraded their logo to be much more fierce. In addition, GM Visser decided to make a coaching change for the farm team bringing in Kirk Muller. "We think his youthfulness will bring in some more energy as this team will need to really help develop our prospects in the next year ahead." GM Visser
